I have been encountering an interesting phenomenon in my practice over the last year. I have worked with many Indigo Families over the last few years. Usually, it is only the children who have exhibited the symptoms of the Indigo Phenomenon. Now, it seems to me that the Indigo Phenomenon might be "contagious".
More and more parents entering my practice seem to have the same issues and challenges as the children. There has been a lot written about adult Indigos but I recently read a new book that I think makes sense of this issue.
According to P.M.H. Attwater in her book, "Children of the New Millennium", many people undergo a brain shift when they begin to change their spiritual practice. This brain shift can also occur as a result of a physical or emotional trauma.
During the brain shift, people literally change from being left-brain dominant to becoming right-brain dominant. This process can occur slowly or quickly depending on what precipitated the shift.
The symptoms of brain shift are listed below:
Physiological Aftereffects:
Changes in thought processing (switch from sequential/selective thinking to clustered thinking and an acceptance of ambiguity) Insatiable curiosity Heightened intelligence More creativity and inventiveness Unusual sensitivity to light and sound Substantially more or less energy (even energy surges, often more sexual) Reversal of body clock Lower blood pressure Accelerated metabolic and substance absorption rates (decreased tolerance of pharmaceuticals and chemically treated products) Electrical sensitivity Synesthesia (multiple sensing) Increased allergies or sensitivities Physically younger appearance (before and after photos can differ)
Psychological Aftereffects:
Loss of the fear of death More spiritual/less religious Able to abstract easily Philosophical Possible bouts of depression Disregard for time More generous and charitable Capable of forming expansive concepts of love while at the same time challenged in initiating and maintaining satisfying relationships Exaggerated "inner child" issues Less competitive Convinced of a life purpose Rejection of previous limitations and norms Heightened sensations of taste, touch, texture and smell Increased psychic ability and future memory episodes Charismatic Childlike sense of wonder and joy Less stressed More detached and objective "Merge" easily Hunger for knowledge and learning

Adapting to these changes can be quite traumatic for some people. In my practice, I have added "Brain Shift Coaching" to my "bag of tools". Educating people about the Brain Shift Phenomenon gives people a tremendous amount of relief.
I believe that the natural spiritual nature of the Indigo Children forces us as parents to seriously re-evaluate our own spirituality. While turning our spiritual focus and practice inward, we invariably initiate the Brain Shift and experience a reality similar to the one experienced by our children.
I also believe that the emotional trauma of 9/11 has initiated a Brain Shift in many people. What many people are experiencing as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder may just be the symptoms of Brain Shift.
This hypothesis is in its infancy for me. I am excited to investigate it further.

Karen
